Paris by Darrin Chandler [18 August 2003]

I figured that French snootiness over how to pronounce "Paris" must surely be unjustified. It had to be named after Paris of Troy, right? Not so.

The Romans named it Lutecia or Lutetia, from Loukteih a Celtic word for marsh or swamp. Loukteih was the name given by the locals, the Gaulic tribe Parisii. In 360AD is was renamed to Paris, after the original settlers. It was made capitol of France by Clovis in 508AD.
