Search Traffic by Darrin Chandler [1 March 2005 14:21 MST]

I have a page of restaurants, and I look at the traffic it gets. There's a link or two out there pointing to it, but mostly traffic comes from search engines. Almost all of that comes from Google. It's not an amazing resource, but I put it there because I had so much trouble finding restaurants in my area. So whenever I eat out I try to update the page with my impressions. The web stats show hits here and there of people searching for just what I've got. So far so good.

The interesting part is that I'll get a steady stream of hits through Google, and all of a sudden I'll get nothing. For weeks. Searches where I had a 1st page placement then don't show me at all. Not just moved down in the rankings a bit, but completely gone!

I have to say I find this odd. Why is Google messing with its results like this? If you're searching for Korean food in Mesa, there aren't many other places to find it. When my page is listed at all, it's generally on the first page or three. So if it's good enough to get ranked that high then why does it get removed later?

I think Google would serve themselves better by worrying about their core business rather than tinkering with Picasa and whatever their desktop search is called. I'm pretty darn sure they would better serve people searching for information.
