Cable Modems by Darrin Chandler [30 March 2005 7:47 MST]
In his weblog, Jim Mischel documents his trouble with Roadrunner connectivity. A while ago I had very similar trouble with my Cox connection. The first time it happened was an ordeal of making the customer service person believe it wasn't my computer. Eventually they scheduled a tech to come out. It was a signal strength problem. He disconnected a splitter (which Cox techs had installed) and it worked for a while. Not the best solution, since it had worked for months with the splitter in place. But it did get the signal strength back. For a while. Six months down the road the trouble reappeared. Signal strength again. Now, Cox wanted to charge to have a tech fix the problem. But it's a problem with their network or install, or both! Obviously, their network was losing signal strength over time. The problem wasn't in my house or equipment. Nobody at Cox seemed capable of believing that. I switched to Qwest DSL, and saved money in the process. They mailed me a box with some line filters and a DSL modem, which arrived the day they said it would. I installed everything in a few minutes. Painlessly. No tech came out, since it was over the existing copper. It's been faster and more reliable.
