Qwest DSL & DNS by Darrin Chandler [16 April 2005 12:29 MST]
Since dropping Cox's “highspeed” internet and switching to Qwest DSL the only gripe I've had is that occasionally their DNS servers quit working for a few minutes. If I'm on for anything longer than a couple of minutes it's pretty much guaranteed to happen. It's effectively an interruption in my internet service, even though I'm actually still connected. If you can't look up anything then you're dead in the water.
Mind, I'm using their “nothing” service (can't remember the actual name), meaning that I don't have an ISP at all. No point-to-point DSL connection or anything. Qwest just throws me online and gives me name servers and that's that. Since most people have an ISP, I assume they get the ISP's name servers from DHCP. So this probably isn't an issue.
But that doesn't help me. I overrode the settings in my network connection and set my own nameservers instead of letting DHCP from Qwest assign them. Problem solved. Of course this is trivial for any geek or IT person. But it's not so obvious to the common person. If you're on Qwest DSL and you're getting “Failed to find XXX…” then this may be your problem.
