Yes, yes. I know it's not continental. Live with it until I reorganize!

Cornish Pasty Company
960 W University, Tempe AZ
480-894-6261
Links: [Web Site]My wife and I stopped in for lunch and the interior struck us immediately. It's a black & white “shotgun” place with a long bar, tiny tables, and lots of photos of miners. The aroma struck next, and it was mouthwatering.
My wife decided to go traditional with the Oggie (steak, potato, onion, rutabaga), while I opted for Lamb & Mint (lamb, mint, potato, onion, rutabaga). Both were served with a side of red wine gravy.
The Oggie was a bit too salty for either of us, but is probably fine for most people. The flavors blended nicely, and the pastry was delicious. My lamb and mint pasty was subtle and flavorful. Both pasties were the slightest bit dry, but the red wine gravy fixed that completely. I suspect the dryness helps the pasty stay in shape and keep from bubbling out its filling during cooking.
There are libations, including a nice selection of imports from across the pond. I started out with McEwan's, but the proprietor Dean Thomas talked me into following with a Skull Splitter.
I like the place, and I see myself going back to try the rest of the menu.

Vito's Pizza Place & Ristorante [Web Site] [Menu]
1947 N Lindsay Rd, Mesa, AZ
480-832-3311Vito's comes highly recommended for their great pizza, but I don't see it. The pizza is half a notch up from delivery, and nothing to rave about.
Update 5/5/2005: due to it's close proximity to my house I decided to give Vito's another try. I had chicken cannelloni, which was decent, and we shared a small cheese and artichoke pizza, which was pretty darn good. It was good enough that I'm sure I'll give it another try.

L'Ecole [Scottsdale Culinary Institute]
8100 E Camelback Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-990-7639“L'Ecole” (French for “The School”) is no misnomer: the food is prepared and served by students of the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. The food was well prepared and the presentation was very nice, but it arrived at our table tepid or cold. The service was not especially good.
