Stuff I look at…

OpenBSD Journal: A resource for the OpenBSD community.

Slashdot is News for Nerds. Apart from misspellings, very bad grammar, and loads of crap it's still a leading source of Geek info. (They have worse grammar then you do.)

xkcd — A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.

Of course, I have a weblog of my very own.

A good friend of mine started Ribald's blog of opinion. He's chosen to remain nameless on his site, so I won't reveal it here.

Jim's Random Notes gives me things to think about from time to time. Jim Mischel is an author, programmer, brewer and cyclist, and all around good guy.

Jeff Duntemann's ContraPositive Diary has the latest news of the suburbs of Colorado Springs, and a few other noteworthy tidbits scattered here and there.

Bruce Schneier's weblog Schneier on Security covers the same material as his Crypto-Gram Newsletter, but on a continuous basis…

Science

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day gives a nice variety of images from amateur photographers to Hubble photos. The site includes an archive dating back to 1995.

Language

Dictionary.com's Word of the Day provides (English) vocabulary enrichment and search boxes for definitions or synonyms. Turn on your pop-up blocker and it's worth visiting.

Jack's Brain: a trip, a meal, a cigar, and I'm happy.

Computer & Internet Security

Crypto-Gram Newsletter is a monthly (published on the 15th) e-mail newsletter on computer security and cryptography from Bruce Schneier. Schneier doesn't mince words and he's usually right on target.

Wiretapped is an archive of software and information covering the areas of host, network and information security, network operations, cryptography and privacy, among others.

The Risks Digest bills itself as "Forum On Risks To The Public In Computers And Related Systems." Mostly it's about failures in mass transit and Internet voting. But don't let that throw you off. If you can get around the people flogging the deceased equine you might find something interesting...

Phrack is a hacker magazine "by the community, for the community." It's an irregularly published mix of interesting hacks, intrusion methods, and who knows what else.

Open Source Software

Check out Vendor Watch for information on which hardware vendors and manufacturers are friendly, open and cooperative and which ... aren't. If you're using open source this can save you time and headaches!

OpenBSD is the way to go if you value security. What's that? Ten (10!) years with only two remote compromises in the default install? Unheard of, but true.
