Facial Beauty and Fractal Geometry

On 15 June 1998, Jürgen Schmidhuber published “Facial Beauty and Fractal Geometry” online. An article referencing Schmidhuber's work was posted to Slashdot. Soon thereafter it was all but impossible to reach the hosting server, www.idsia.ch, from the U.S., and probably from other places. I was one of those interested enough to keep trying until I had assembled a complete copy on my local computer.

Once I had a complete copy, it occured to me that I could offer to mirror the article. I sent an email to Schmidhuber asking if he'd like me to mirror and he said yes. He also explained that the actual servers were working fine, but somewhere along the line there was a very saturated skinny pipe. Anyway, I copied the files to my ancient 486/33MHz Linux server and posted a comment to Slashdot saying I had a mirror up with Schmidhuber's permission. Schmidhuber moved his original to a new URL and put a lightweight page in it's place pointing to the new location, but also my mirror site. Soon other people also put up mirrors and were listed there as well. Over the next week or so I got an incredible number of requests, which my little box handled just fine. Decent connectivity works wonders, sometimes.

Except for an interruption of about a year, I've kept the mirror up and always received a small but steady streams of requests. The need for a mirror is long past, and at this point I'm only taking hits away from Schmidhuber's own site, where there are many other interesting things to see. So as of 5 November 2005 I've removed the actual content and replaced it with what you're seeing now.
